Whether it is for a balcony, deck or patio, some kind of outdoor furniture is nearly a requirement for homeowners and renters alike. Patio furniture is available in a myriad of materials these days. You will find it made with aluminum, PVC, wrought iron, wicker - and of course - Wood! Wood patio furniture is most often constructed from either cedar or teak. Which one is best for you will depend on your own personal preferences and how much you are willing to pay.

The same oils that give cedar its pleasant fragrance also act as a natural insect repellant protecting it from the bugs that can eat away at other types of wood. Cedar also has natural properties that protect it from the elements. If left untreated the wood will eventually change color to a silvery shade that some find very attractive. A clear sealant or transparent stain applied to your cedar patio furniture will maintain the original color and keep it looking like new for several years.

Teak is one of the strongest hardwoods available and is very attractive, but it can be rather expensive. If you're looking for truly high quality and long lasting durability then teak is the wood for you. It will hold up through years of use and varying weather conditions. Teak can be left natural or stained depending on which fits best with your style and other patio decor. You can increase your teak patio furniture's natural protection from the weather by applying any of the various oils and treatments that are readily available.

While wood patio furniture does require a little maintenance every few years, but it is worth it to maintain its natural beauty. You can prolong the life of your wood outdoor furniture by covering it during the off-season with a waterproof fabric. And wood furniture should not be placed directly on the lawn for long periods of time, which could expose it to excessive moisture. Just putting something between the wood and the grass is all the protection that is needed.
